What are Affirmations?
Affirmations are positive statements that describe a sought after situation, and which are repeated numerous times, either out loud or internally. They are thought to trigger the subconscious into bringing about the desired goal or state. In order to guarantee the effectiveness of affirmations they are best repeated with attention, intention, and a strong belief in the desired outcome.
Most individuals repeat in their minds damaging words and statements concerning themselves and how they see the world, and therefore, produce limited and undesirable results. The words we use are powerful and can have either a positive or harmful effect on the way we see ourselves. It’s the way we use words that determines whether they are going to have a positive or negative consequence on us.
Often, we repeat negative statements in our minds without even being aware of it. Do you keep thinking and telling yourself that you can’t manage something, that you aren’t any good at something, that you are too lazy, don’t have the talent or skills, or that you always fail at whatever you attempt? Your subconscious accepts as true what you tell it, and eventually starts to shape your reality to match this view you have of yourself. We never stop to question why we do this. We wouldn’t let a stranger abuse us 24 hours a day so why do we talk to ourselves this way?
Affirmations program the brain in the same way commands and scripts program a computer. They work in the same manner as creative visualisation. The repeated words help you centre your mind on your aim, and automatically build matching mental images in the conscious mind, which in turn affect the subconscious. The conscious mind, the mind you think with, begins this process, and then the subconscious takes over. By utilising this process consciously and with intent, you can affect your subconscious and thereby transform your habits, behaviour, attitude and reactions, and even remould your external life.
Occasionally results appear quickly, but more often that not, this process requires patience and consistency. Getting results depends on several factors, such as the time you can invest in reprogramming your mind, and the focus, faith, and intention you invest in repeating your affirmations. The type of goal you are aiming for, its size and complexity, along with how strongly you desire it, all play a role in how quickly you will see results.
It’s crucial to understand that just repeating a few positive affirmations a few times or for a few minutes, and then going back to thinking negative thoughts for the rest of the day, will not produce the desired change in the way you think and experience the world. You have to refuse to think damaging thoughts if you wish to see positive results.
The affirmations on the following pages are just examples. You can use all, only some of them, or none. Feel free to modify them as you see fit. The important thing with affirmations is that they work for YOU. If you have your own, use them. You are welcome to share any of your own affirmations for others to benefit from :).
